College of Arts and Sciences, American University

Dean Peter StarrFROM DEAN PETER STARR
In this issue of Connections, we feature news and achievements from College of Arts and Sciences faculty, students, and alumni.

Our remarkable colleague, University Professor Jack Child, passed away in June. Jack was a passionate scholar of Latin America, as knowledgeable about the continent’s geopolitics as he was about its national cultures. He has left a mark that will enrich our community for many years to come.

Curiosity is the lifeblood of our academic community. It drives U. J. Sofia, the College’s newly appointed associate dean for research, to measure changes in the sun. It leads faculty and students across the College to pair up to find answers to our age’s most pressing questions. And it drives the work of our stellar new faculty, profiled here.

Don Rothfeld has given 151 pieces of contemporary, mixed media Israeli art to the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center. Rothfeld envisions his collection as enriching both the American University Museum at the Katzen Arts Center and the wider dialogue on Israel politics and culture.
