Susan Carmel Lehrman Awards

The Carmel Institute of Russian Culture and History invites applications for five Susan Carmel Lehrman awards for the study of Russian language, culture, and international relations. The award provides up to $8,000 for tuition and travel expenses to attend the interdisciplinary summer programs in Russian language, culture, and international relations at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO University) or the Higher School of Economics in June-August 2017.

The award is open to all students in the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. Applications will be judged based on the student's academic record (unofficial transcripts are fine) and an essay explaining how summer study in Russia fits in with the student's current academic interests and professional goals. Please include your name at the top of the essay file. Please also note that transcripts must be in an image or Adobe Acrobat file, preferably showing the school's name and/or logo in the file.

To apply, email application materials (all in one email) to carmelinstitute@american.edu:

  • Completed application form
  • Transcripts (undergraduate and graduate, if applicable)
  • Essay of no more than 150 words are due
  • By 5 pm on Wednesday, April 19, 2017.

If you are an AU student and would like to receive academic credit for your summer courses, please contact Mark Hayes (hayes@american.edu). For all other students, please check with your respective institutions' study abroad offices with questions about credit transfers and home tuition rates.

If you submitted an application for the 2016 Symington Award and would like the same materials to be considered for one of the 2017 Susan Carmel Lehrman awards, please indicate so in an e-mail to carmelinstitute@american.edu.
